Commentary Is Cancer, and How the Media Lies To You

For many Americans it is a morning staple to sit down with a cup of coffee and read the morning paper.

As the first source of information a man can obtain before he sets off to start his day, it’s important that this information should brighten his day and put him in a positive mindset to face the many travails ahead of him. If not that, then at least spark some creative thoughts in his head, but not so anymore.

Now when men arise they are greeted with this…

Yes, the first image men awaken to is the story of a mother beating her four year old toddler to death. This is the mindset of savagery and barbarism the (((media))) wants to instill into us men.  The mindset that senseless violence will meet you around every corner, strangers will attack you, a general pervasive sense of societal malaise.

This is not so, and will never be. You can today choose to build your relationships with friends and neighbors that share a like minded attitude and values. You can raise proud children that know right from wrong and are not afraid to voice their opinions, and you can vote in local elections to influence your communities fate. Although we will never give up hope, there are some like the owner of the Daily News who wish to fear monger us into submission. I wonder what that parasite who seeks to divide us along racial and economic lines looks like…

And here’s our culprit (((Mortimer Zuckerman))) pictured on the right. Every damn time.

How Far We’ve Come

Then: Strong orators delivering inspiring speeches to stir the collective soul of the populace.

“This is a breathtaking pace, and such a pace cannot help but create new ills as it dispels old, new ignorance, new problems, new dangers. Surely the opening vistas of space promise high costs and hardships, as well as high reward.

So it is not surprising that some would have us stay where we are a little longer to rest, to wait. But this city of Houston, this State of Texas, this country of the United States was not built by those who waited and rested and wished to look behind them. This country was conquered by those who moved forward–and so will space.

William Bradford, speaking in 1630 of the founding of the Plymouth Bay Colony, said that all great and honorable actions are accompanied with great difficulties, and both must be enterprised and overcome with answerable courage.

If this capsule history of our progress teaches us anything, it is that man, in his quest for knowledge and progress, is determined and cannot be deterred. The exploration of space will go ahead, whether we join in it or not, and it is one of the great adventures of all time, and no nation which expects to be the leader of other nations can expect to stay behind in the race for space.

Those who came before us made certain that this country rode the first waves of the industrial revolutions, the first waves of modern invention, and the first wave of nuclear power, and this generation does not intend to founder in the backwash of the coming age of space. We mean to be a part of it–we mean to lead it. For the eyes of the world now look into space, to the moon and to the planets beyond, and we have vowed that we shall not see it governed by a hostile flag of conquest, but by a banner of freedom and peace. We have vowed that we shall not see space filled with weapons of mass destruction, but with instruments of knowledge and understanding.

Yet the vows of this Nation can only be fulfilled if we in this Nation are first, and, therefore, we intend to be first. In short, our leadership in science and in industry, our hopes for peace and security, our obligations to ourselves as well as others, all require us to make this effort, to solve these mysteries, to solve them for the good of all men, and to become the world’s leading space-faring nation.”

Difficult to only choose one section, read this fantastic speech in its entirety here.

Schools: Then And Now

From John Glubb’s classic “The Fate Of Empires”:

XIV: Art and Luxury-

“The first half of the Age Of Commerce appears to be peculiarly splendid. The ancient virtues of courage, patriotism, and devotion to duty are still in evidence. The nation is proud, united, and full of self confidence. Boys are still required, first of all, to be manly- to ride, to shoot straight, and to tell the truth. (It is remarkable what emphasis is placed, at this stage, on the manly virtue of truthfulness, for lying is cowardice- the fear of facing up to the situation.)

Boy’s schools are intentionally rough. Frugal eating, hard living, breaking the ice to have a bath and similar customs are aimed at producing a strong, hardy, and fearless breed of men. Duty is the word constantly drummed into the heads of young people.”

Strength and athleticism

Duty and pride in your nation.
Attentiveness and pride in your appearance.
I love this pic because it shows you can be a badass woman without the trashy tattoos, short hair, and argumentative demeanor that modern feminists have adopted.
Feminists take note; you can be a bad-ass without the short hair and trashy tats.
Fighting is healthy.
Fighting is healthy and every boy should be taught to throw a proper punch.

XV: The Age Of Affluence-

“There does not appear to be any doubt that money is the agent which causes the decline of this strong, brave, and self-confident people. The decline in courage, enterprise, and a sense of duty, however, gradual.
The first direction in which wealth injures the nation is a moral one. Money replaces honour and adventure as the objective of the best young men. Moreover, men do not normally seek to make money for their country or their community, but for themselves. Gradually and almost imperceptibly, the Age of Affluence silences the voice of duty. The object of the young and the ambitious is no longer fame, honour, or service, but cash.
Education undergoes the same gradual transformation. No longer do schools aim at producing brave patriots ready to serve their country. Parents and students alike seek the educational qualifications which command the highest salaries.”
People pay thousands of dollars for this.
People pay thousands of dollars for this.
Our old friend childhood obesity.

The last one kicks me right in the nuggets. Out of 34 OECD countries we ranked fifth in spending per student.  However we ranked 26th in math, 21st in science, and 17th in reading.

The Worst Reputation A Man Can Have

This article only deals with non criminal actions within small social group settings such as family, co-workers, friends, and school since this is where the majority of men spend their time. Some of these reputations get flipped on their head when you’re famous (or infamous), but that is not within the scope of this article.

1) A known liarYou’re lying out of insecurity and trying to impress someone or you honestly believe your own bullshit and think they’re stupid enough to believe it too. Which ever it is, cut that shit out.

Best case: White lies, chronic exaggerator.

Worst case: Sociopathic levels of lying. Bold faced attention seeking lies. Saying you’ll do something and never following through.

What you think is happening.
What you think is happening.
What's really happening.
What’s really happening.

2) A gossipJust remember, it always gets back to them, and the eventual ass kicking will get back to you.

Best case: Harmless infrequent jokes about public information.

Worst case: Betrayal of another persons trusted secrets. Chronic shit talking.

Who you think you are.
Who you think you are.
Who you really are.
Who you really are.

3) A complainer- Life is difficult, no one cares for you’re complaints. Choose an action and follow through. If there is a legitimate concern by all means address it, if not, stay quiet.

Best case: A funny joke about a shared  group complaint.

Worst case:  Chronic frivolous complaints.

Who you think you are.
Who you think you are.
Who you really are
Who you really are

The overarching value that runs through most of these is trust. That is what keeps small groups humming along and once you betray that the group is splintered and easily destroyed. If you carry one of these sordid reputations there are only two ways to rehabilitate it. The first is to simply move on to another group, but they too will see through the facade eventually. The second is intensive character building and relationship repair. Expect months if not years of constantly working to fix the damage you incurred, but in the end you all become stronger for it.

In Case You Missed It- Week of 11/16/14

Interesting stuff I found around the way.

-Sarah and The Seed– A fantastic short web comic by Ryan Andrews I recently came across. In only five parts Ryan weaves a great tale that will be sure to leave you amazed when you finish.

-The American ScholarAn Oration delivered before the Phi Beta Kappa Society, at Cambridge, August 31, 1837

-This 980 hp 1966 Chevelle– Supercharged LS7, yes please

-This ridiculously funky track by Marian Hill

-Many years later and I still find this hilarious.

Great Books For Men Is Unfortunately Gone

Read GBFM’s One Cock Rule

GBFM has apparently been suspended by wordpress rather suddenly for undisclosed reasons. Thursday night he/she/they replied in typical long form to a comment I left there and come Friday morning the site was gone. A sad day indeed, for GBFM has proven to be one of my favorite writers in modern times.

Where once stood a sea of nihilistic game bloggers and churchians, GBFM carved out a niche where men looking to better themselves through scripture, literature, and moral virtue could find solace. Before I found Deep Strength and a few other blogs, his was the only one that exalted the teachings of Jesus, the values of honor, respect, and family, while also taking the time to provide a comprehensive list of books for men to read. Years ago I was one of fanboyz mashing buttonz in my basements, a PUA artsitsz trying to get my occkas wet in sterile bungholez and sterilized ginaholez made sterile by the fed’s before and morning after pillz. But his constant urgings to find the solutions to my problems in the great literature of our forefathers was one of the main reasons I started to not only read the Bible but also apply the teachings to my life.

Without further adieu, here is one of my favorite pieces he has penned.

The renaissance hath begun.

As Athena called Telemachus to adventure–to sail forth and learn the news of His True Father Odysseus, so too does GBFM call upon ye to man up, sail forth, and learn the news of your true Fathers.

Like Hamlet you came of age in a world where your father–THE GREAT BOOKS FOR MEN–had been murdered. Where they had been debauched, debased, bernenekfified out of the fiat-debt curriculum. And just as Hamlet’s Father called upon Him to Avenge his Death and Set the World Right, so too do I call upon all of ye buton-mashing gamersz and manboob betasz churchians to Man Up and Honor Your True Fathers.

Like Odysseus’s son Telemachus you came of age in a house occupied by false suitors trying to buttehxt your mom Penelope alongside your future wife, deosuling her faster than Bill Bennett can gamble away a million dollars in Vegas. You came of age in a home absent of your true Father–Odysseus and THE GREAT BOOKS FOR MEN.

Like Telemachus and Hamlet, you were born to know of your Fathers and do the work of your Fathers, as did Jesus. And like Jesus, you were born into a fallen world occupied by arrogant neeoconth Scribes and Pharisees, lorded over by intellectually-indifferent Pontius Pilates, ruled by mobs (and female prison wardensz lzozlz) who vote to set the murderer free, while sending Jesus to die upon the Cross.

But all of that was then, and This is Now.

Do not fail to Honor your Fathers by neglecting to live for the Classical, Epic Honor that so many of them not only Lived for, but Died For.

Do not turn away from the vast Gifts they bequeathed you with–THE GREAT BOOKS AND CLASSICS.

Begin today, begin today, all ye fanboyz mashing buttonz in your single-mom’s basements, all you PUA artsitsz trying to get your occkas wet in sterile bungholez and sterilized ginaholez made sterile by the fed’s before and morning after pillz. Begin today, all my fatherless, ritalin-addicted, gold-farming sons and READ the GREAT BOOKS FOR MEN.

Learn of the HONOR of your FATHERS form Achilles and Moses on down. The tiny-cckcoaaks white-knighting Churchians will scowl and stamp their feet and scream at you that Jesus cam to Abolish the Law, while Jesus himself stated that He came to Fulfill it.

When you were a child ye partook in childish things–in mashing buttons in your meaningless videogamez.

But now that you are a Man, it is time to Man Up, which does not mean marrying a babebrnekified beenrnakified butethxted, desouled, single monz, but reading THE GREAT BOOKS FOR MEN.

Begin today my firendz. BEGIINZ TODAYZ.

I propose that a renaissance in the Great Books and Classics is needed so as to re-instill a more traditional Code of Honor which will enrich the lives of men, women, and children, and liberate us all from the debt-financed debauchery, deconstruction, and debasement.

All men should begin immediately by reading the following books which the central bankers and their fellow churchians hate, fear, and detest:

1. Homer’s Iliad
2. Homer’s Odyssey
3. Exodus & Ecclesiastes & The Psalms
4. Virgil’s Aeneid
5. Socrates’ Apology
6. The Book of Matthew & Jefferson’s Bible
7. Plato’s Repulic
8. Seneca’s Letters from a Stoic
9. Aristotle’s Poetics
10. Dante’s Inferno
11. The Declaration of Independence
12. The Constitution
13. John Milton’s Paradise Lost
14. Shakespeare’s Hamlet
15. Newton’s Principia
16. Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations and Theory of Moral Sentiments
17. Henry David Thoreau’s Walden
18. Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn (& all of his work)
19. Shakespeare’s Hamlet
20. Ludwig von Mises’ A Theory of Money and Credit
21. F.A. Hayek’s The Road to Serfdom
22. Herman Melville’s Moby Dick
23. Einstein’s The Meaning of Relativity
24. Joseph Campbell’s The Hero With a Thousand Faces and The Power of Myth
25. Ron Paul’s Revolution & End the Fed

And as men are reading the Great Books for Men, they must start enacting their principles in the living world, so as to exalt our legal system and universities, for it is not enough to think and read, but virtue is ultimately defined by *action*.

Good luck to you GBFM, I wish you well.

The Sky Isn’t Falling, The World Isn’t Burning

The world is still full of opportunity, hope, and success. Do not listen to the fervent, rabid rantings of those who urge you to “sit poolside and watch it all burn”. Apathy is the enemy and every new day that passes brings further advancements in medicine, technology, architecture, and culture. However if you listen to the naysayers in the media and some prominent bloggers in this corner of the Internet you would think western culture is breathing its last tepid breath. Staples of their arguments consist of rising divorce rates, twerking, ISIS, popular music, etc… yet I refuse to believe we reside in a cultural dark age. There is and always will be good, well meaning people providing quality art that inspires the masses. Here are some of those people and their work.

Alina Baraz

Talented singer coming out of Cleveland, Ohio. Has created quite a stir in the electronica world with her amazing voice and collaborations with producer Galamatias.

George Maple

Another sultry singer, this one coming out of Sydney, Australia. I find it difficult to classify her fantastic music into one genre so I’ll let you decide.

Nicolas Jaar

The greatest producer you’ve probably never heard of. At only 24 years old, Jaar has taken the music world by storm since 2011 and has released a slew of hits that have tossed up the electronica world. Together with his interdisciplinary production house Other People, Jaar’s stock continues to rise worldwide.

Buy it, thank me later
Buy it, thank me later

My all-time favorite producer continues to amaze music lovers worldwide by dropping fire on a consistent basis. Six days ago on 10/20/14 he released the title track Flashlight off his album of the same name and it properly hyped us for another solid masterpiece set to drop 12/1/14.

Let the world know about other artists that deserve to be heard from in the comments below. Until the next time, keep your head up and forge forward, all progress depends on you my friend.

Approachable Adventure: Hiking NY’s Highest Mountain- Mt Marcy

Since I began living in one of New York’s most mountainous regions my friends and I have steadily progressed through higher peaks. Starting at our town’s highest and progressing up the chain, county, state, region, etc… This is my guide for Mt. Marcy, our state’s highest peak, but first some background to the area.

At only 4-5 hours away from NYC, Mt Marcy and the surrounding Adirondacks make an excellent weekend trip for those seeking an inexpensive adventure. Of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks, Marcy is the highest at 5,344 ft, but far from the most difficult / technical (Gothics, arguably takes the most difficult crown due to the steep ascent).

The region itself is stunning, with breathtaking views in almost every direction. The smell however was the sense that left the most acute impression. The air was and still is the freshest I have ever smelled as fresh pine permeates every breath and reinvigorates you to penetrate deeper into the pristine Adirondacks even before you get near the trail head.

The trail we chose was the well traveled Van Hoevenberg trail which leads through all the major sites and the eventual summit. This trail is of moderate difficulty but the length of the trail itself was the biggest issue I had. It clocks in at approximately 14.4 to 15 miles (range varies by source) round trip over some rough terrain (rocky crevasses, rock scrambles, alpine zone) and is not for the weak willed. As young naive hikers we didn’t pack nearly enough for this endeavor and although we made it, it turned out to be extremely tough (more on this later).

(I skip past the twists and turns and just list the sites, if you want a trail guide I recommend this one, as this is the exact one that got me there and back safely. )Anyways, a few miles in you’ll see Marcy Dam which is the first major site on the trail. Don’t be fooled by the tame trek so far, the trail starts to ascend a bit more around mile 3 and continues to do so steadily for a few more miles. The next site is the Adirondack Loj around mile 5 where hikers congregate to meet each other and swap stories. You can also stay overnight in the Loj if you reserve a spot and want to spend some more time in the Adirondacks. Past this you trek into the alpine zone where there are no more trees and sparse vegetation. The crevasses come into full swing here and in the winter become a real danger.

Continuing on you’ll find yourself at  Lake Tear of The Clouds, a serene beauty that provides a quaint place to regroup before you hit the top. This lake was originally (incorrectly) thought to be the source of the Hudson and as New Yorker’s born and raised we drank from it unfiltered, something you cannot do further down state. From there the peak is about one mile up through the rocky alpine zone and a small rock scramble. Luckily the weather stayed clear and we got a phenomenal view of Keene and the surrounding mountains.

Here are the tips I learned the hard way on Mt. Marcy:

-I drove four hours to the mountain, hiked for eight to ten hours, then tried to drive back four hours all in the same day.  We wanted to same day this since we were naive punks at the time. Get a hotel / campsite so you can rest properly and get more than the three hours of sleep I got before this trek.

-If the recommended round-trip time is 8-12 hours, ALWAYS plan for 12.  Bring enough food, water, and painkillers for the upper limit. We all ran out of these things around mile 11 of 14.8.

-That last .1 of a mile is the longest .1 ever hiked.

Use this trail guide.

That’s all folks, I wish I could remember more but this took place 5 years ago and we’ve climbed many more mountains since then. I’ll be writing about New Hampshire’s highest peak, the dangerous Mt. Washington next so stayed tuned.
